LAYTON — A teen driver attempting a new and dangerous fad inspired by a Netflix movie caused a crash earlier this week, Layton Police say.
At 4:50 p.m. Monday, a 17-year-old girl was driving a gray truck east along Layton Parkway when she pulled her beanie over her eyes to attempt the “Bird Box Challenge,” Layton Police Lt. Travis Lyman said.
The driver then lost control and slid into the westbound lane, striking a white passenger car and a light pole near 675 Layton Parkway, Lyman said. No one was injured.
Initially, police were told the crash was caused by the driver getting distracted while she talked to her 16-year-old male passenger, Lyman said. After getting some additional information about the crash, police re-interviewed the teens a few days later, which was when they revealed the crash had been caused by the “Bird Box” Challenge.
“Bird Box” is a recently released Netflix drama featuring Sandra Bullock where a woman and her children live in an apocalyptic world that requires them to cover their eyes to avoid evil in order to escape.
The “Bird Box” Challenge involves people blindfolding themselves while doing everyday tasks. Netflix even issued a warning about the challenge in a tweet, saying, “Can’t believe I have to say this, but: PLEASE DO NOT HURT YOURSELVES WITH THIS BIRD BOX CHALLENGE. We don’t know how this started, and we appreciate the love, but Boy and Girl have just one wish for 2019 and it is that you not end up in the hospital due to memes.”
Lyman said police have requested the teen driver be charged with misdemeanor reckless driving.
