Throughout 2018, Childish Gambino has been clear that his days in the music industry are winding down. After taking home a Grammy in February, Donald Glover said his next project would be his last as Childish Gambino. "I’m really appreciative of this. I’m making another project right now, but I like endings, I think they’re important to progress," he told Billboard after the Grammys. This year, he's released a handful of songs, including the stunning video for "This Is America." Meanwhile, he's been vocal about retiring his music persona as he embarked on what he said would be his last tour as Childish Gambino.
Now, as 2018 comes to a close, Gambino appears on his first and only feature of the year, adding a verse to "Monster" on 21 Savage's new album i am > i was.
The track makes clear Gambino's disillusion with the industry. "Might pull out, the game so weak," he raps early in his verse. Then later he raps:
If they paid you to do it, you don't gotta ask what you worth
Me and Savage, we came from the dirt
If you rappin' for money, you silly
This shit ain't a milli', this shit is a hundred
The industry savage and most of you average
Together, Gambino and Savage rap on the chorus, "Power, the money, and the fame make a monster."
The message is clear enough: Glover is sick of what the industry does to people. And it's hard to blame him. He's long considered his music persona a hobby, and in his position, he can do whatever he wants.
