Macy's apologizes for Thanksgiving Parade 'technical difficulties' after lip-sync mishap

John Legend and Macy's are setting the record straight about artists lip-syncing during Thursday's Thanksgiving Day Parade telecast.

Macy's issued an apology via its official Twitter account later that day. "During today’s NBC broadcast of the #MacysParade several recording artists experienced technical difficulties that negatively impacted their performance," the retailer's tweet read. "We apologize and want fans to know these issues were out of the artist’s control."

The statement followed a tweet from Legend defending fellow performer Rita Ora, who was called out for visibly lip-syncing.

"Fun fact. We all have to lip sync on this parade because the floats don't have the capacity to handle the sound requirements for a live performance," he tweeted before his own set.

"However, Legend promised his fans that the same could not be said for his concerts. He is currently embarking on "A Legendary Christmas" tour, promoting his new album by the same name.

"Hope y'all enjoyed it anyway," he added.  "Know that if you come to my shows, the vocals are 100% live!"

Ora acknowledged his tweet, replying: "Thank you and I appreciate the honesty and I hope everyone still had a great time!"

She acknowledged that the artists do find the parade's technical restrictions "annoying" but also made a similar guarantee about the authenticity of her own live shows.

"All my shows are 100 percent live, always have been!" she promised.

A sampling of the criticism against Ora following her performance:

"I don’t blame Rita Ora for what just happened... But that was the most cringeworthy thing I’ve watched in awhile," user @theBurk3nator tweeted.

@DeeH_NYC said a Thanksgiving turkey isn't the only thing "getting roasted."

@Mishyyfishyy pointed out that Ora wasn't "singing on time at all."
