5 actors who could replace Superman Henry Cavill as the new Man of Steel

Wanted: Actor dude to wear Superman’s cape. Muscles, heart and a winning smile needed. Mustaches need not apply.

It seems Hollywood may be in need of a new Man of Steel after a post from The Hollywood Reporter about Henry Cavill stepping away from the role following his stints in “Man of Steel,” “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” and “Justice League.” (Warner Bros. tells USA TODAY in a statement that "no decisions have been made regarding any upcoming Superman films" and that the studio has "always had great respect for and a great relationship with Henry Cavill, and that remains unchanged.”)

Honestly, if it comes to pass and the British actor bows out, it’d be a shame, since Cavill started to really fill the requirements of a great Superman in his last go-round. But no worries: We have some options for the next guy to fill out the tights and follow in the path of the late Christopher Reeve, Brandon Routh and Cavill.

Armie Hammer

A little more than a decade ago, Hammer was slated to play Batman in George Miller’s Justice League movie before it got scrapped. But Cavill’s “The Man From U.N.C.L.E.” co-star has the height (he’s 6-foot-5!), the grin and the deep voice needed – Hammer’s Superman would definitely have an undeniable presence. (He's going to have to shave, though.)

Henry Golding

Never mind that the Malaysian actor might be a tough sell for those fans (and perhaps studio executives) who expect, if not demand, that the A-list-iest of A-list superheroes be a buff white guy. But Golding has heat coming off of "Crazy Rich Asians," he really does look the part, and it would be a huge win for representation in Hollywood.

Benjamin Walker

The “Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter” star is tall and handsome, so he at least looks like a Superman. Walker also isn't a huge star – and neither were Cavill or Reeve – plus he was a stand-up comedian at one point, so he could give Supes a sense of humor to go along with punching meteors and keeping buildings from falling on innocent bystanders.

Dwayne Johnson

He is Superman, after all. Johnson has long been attached to play antihero Black Adam in the DC Comics movies, though getting to be the big blue boy scout seems like it would be a decent promotion. He’s beloved by pretty much the entire world, is physically overqualified and would be a different Man of Steel than we’ve ever seen before. But the 80-year-old character might benefit from a Rock makeover.

A complete unknown

Routh was an Midwestern kid who had a few TV credits (“Will & Grace,” “Gilmore Girls”) when he was handed the Superman mantle, and there was a freshness to the choice. At a time when every casting decision is picked apart to death by social media and the Twitterati, having someone who can simply wear the cape and not bring a long resume, other franchise or various baggage behind him may be the best choice of them all.
