Ariana Grande Made Sure Pete Davidson's SNL Return Will Be as Awkward as Possible

In the three weeks since Saturday Night Live last aired a new episode, Pete Davidson has gone from filling a significant amount of his time on the show with jokes about his engagement to Ariana Grande to quipping, in a promo for this week’s new episode, about their breakup. In a video filmed with Saturday’s host, Jonah Hill, and musical guest, Maggie Rogers, Davidson threw in a crack about spontaneously proposing to Rogers. Ariana Grande saw it. Ariana Grande was not pleased.

In a series of now-deleted tweets sent Thursday night, Grande wrote, “For somebody who claims to hate relevancy u sure love clinging to it huh.” She also reportedly added, “Thank u, next” and “hell naw tho.”

Throughout their brief but intense relationship, Davidson consistently talked about how Grande far eclipsed him in fame. On S.N.L this season, he joked that she paid $60,000 a month in rent, and all he had to do was stock the fridge. But their engagement also spiked Davidson’s star power immensely, to the point that when S.N.L. returned in September, there was an entire sketch about it. Davidson, who has put on the persona of the reluctant star in the past with what GQ called his “shoulder-shrugging brand of comedy,” told Howard Stern in September that he has received a death threat just for being with Grande. For better or for worse, the past five months brought a level of visibility Davidson had not known in the past.

As Vanity Fair’s Joanna Robinson noted weeks before the breakup, S.N.L. has been capitalizing on this relationship. The relationship began around the show’s season finale this past spring, and ended near the start of the new season this fall. If the promo is any indication, Lorne Michaels and Davidson are not done getting everything out of this short-lived thing as they possibly can. And Grande can probably be counted on to tweet about it.
